Linda Murray: What do contractions feel like? We’ve all heard that they’re painful to varying degrees, but in what way? Here’s how some women have described them as strong menstrual cramps, a Charlie horse, pressure, tightness, achy throbbing, gas pains, and a backache that wraps around to the abdomen.
Mom 1: The labor pains themselves felt like menstrual cramps, only more intense. And for me they always felt like—not necessarily like a squeezing but more of a burning sensation that kind of would move down.
Mom 2: It was definitely the most awful pain I’ve ever had, like falling to the floor contractions.
Mom 3: Like a crescendo. It would rise up and get to a point where you could hardly stand it and then it would subside.
Mom 4: At that time, I didn’t even know back pain, front pain—it was just pain all over.
